African
and European Traditions Meet: Fife & Drum Bands of the Delta
The music of the fife and drum bands of Mississippi and
Georgia is a unique form, strongly influenced by African performance
styles. Some musicologists call it a form of the blues, and
some claim it predates the blues and influenced the development
of that form. The music is mainly performed at large picnics,
and most of the tunes played are meant for dancing.
