for Drum Shell and Counterhoop Materials, Snare Gut, Drum
Heads, Artwork, Tack Design, Warranty and Registration are
the same as for the Liberty Model Drums.
Please bear in mind that these are basic suggestions. The
degree to which the drum is made suitable to the contemporary
percussionist while maintaining authenticity to the period
is entirely up to the individual musician. Contact us for

Shell Sizes
A
widely used rule of thumb for this period is that the shell
should be "square" (e.g. 16" x 16"), or no more than 2" longer
than its diameter (e.g. 16" x 18"). For bass drums we recommend
24" dia. and a width as large as you can comfortably carry
(e.g. 20" x 24" is a popular size). All Cooperman drums are
custom made to order in a wide range of depths and diameters.
Rope tension snare drums are named by shell size as "diameter
x depth"; bass drums follow the modern convention in being
named "depth X diameter". Finished drums stand nearly 3" taller
than their nominal size.

Hardware
- Our
Early 19th C. Model Snare Strainer, cast
in bronze, is a reproduction of an original Civil War
period hoop-mounted strainer. This style of strainer
is quite old and changed little over the early part
of the century.
- Our
Early 19th C. Model Drum Carry
for the snare drum is either a simple loop of rope or,
for British and Canadian units, a bronze British angle
hook. Bass drums are standard with 2 Liberty Model carry
hooks.
- Drum
Legs are not appropriate for Early 19th
Century Model Drums.
Drum
Ears
We
offer a reproduction Eli Brown ear for this period, in
russet leather. Liberty ears may be substituted on request.
Drum
Rope
Our standard rope is 1/4" spun dacron, which reaches
maximum stretch quickly and is very durable. Optional
ropes include 5/16" filament dacron and 1/4" 4-strand
linen, a natural fiber rope which we have custom made
to our specifications.
