The core of our field drum line is the Liberty Model, heir to an ancient tradition of rope tension drums dating back over 400 years. Its design pays full respect to its heritage while incorporating modern technology and acoustics to create the most advanced rope tension drum in the world today.

Specifications for Liberty Model Drums

Drum Shell and Counterhoop Materials

  • Our Standard Ash Laminated Drum Shell is an excellent high-performance shell, resonant and strong. Selected sizes also available in birds-eye maple and white maple.
  • Our Handcrafted Solid Wood Drum Shell is custom milled at our Vermont shop from the highest quality veneer-grade tree, in maple, ash and other native hardwoods.
  • All Shells are finished to order in a selection of standard paints and stains. Custom finishes are optional.
  • Snare and Bass Counterhoops are formed of solid maple, dimension cut at our Vermont sawmill. We finish our counterhoops to order in a selection of standard paints and stains. Custom finishes are optional.

Drum Shell Sizes
Liberty Model Drums are custom made to order in a wide range of depths and diameters. Rope tension snare drums are named by shell size as "diameter x depth"; bass drums follow the modern convention in being named "depth X diameter". Finished drums stand nearly 3" taller than their nominal size.

Drum Hardware

  • Our Liberty Model Snare Strainer, cast in bronze, provides a level of adjustment and sensitivity unparalleled in the rope tension drum tradition.
  • Our Liberty Model Drum Carry is a closed-eye design, custom cast in very durable bronze. Bass drums are standard with 2 carry hooks. More may be added for an additional fee.
  • Our Cast Bronze Drum Legs are mounted three to each snare drum counterhoop. Legs are not mounted on bass drums.
  • Our Cast Bronze Rim Guards are usually mounted as a pair on the batter counterhoop to protect the material and finish from rim shots. These are available for an additional fee.

Snare Gut
We use the finest quality natural gut, with the number of strands and the gauge carefully chosen to suit each type of strainer. Custom gauges and/or combinations will be accommodated whenever possible.

Drum Ears
Our Liberty ears are made of hard leather tied with natural vellum lace. Standard in chestnut brown; available also in black or russet (tan). We also offer British style white leather ears (rough side out).

Drum Rope
Our standard rope is 5/16" filament Dacron, which reaches maximum stretch quickly and is very durable. Optional ropes include 1/4" spun dacron and 1/4" 4-strand linen, a natural fiber rope which we have custom made to our specifications.

Drum Heads
Remo Custom Manufactured Heads are standard, made for us with no logo and heavy weight mounting rims.
For an additional fee, you may also choose:
Swiss Kevlar Batter Head/Swiss Mylar Snare Head, featuring bright sound and outstanding durability, for snare drums.
